DIY - First Aid Kit Box

Another one of my organizational idea projects, a box for our first aid kit. I know that now that I have a kid, this is really important, it's something that we should have though we wish that we don't get to use it. I could just buy a box or a plastic tub for it but my DIY aficionado self wanted to make one on my own, of course. I was planning on making one a long time ago since our first aid stuff were just in a plastic tray without a lid but I have forgotten about it or didn't have the chance to do so until recently. I was once again organizing the tray where I keep Jordana's stuff but this time I actually decluttered it and loved the result that I decided to do the same with our first aid kit.

This is now how my baby's tray looks like. I should have taken a before and after photo because there was a really big improvement. I got to throw away small packs of baby wipes that I guess already dried out, sample packs of diapers which are already small for her that I don't really know why I haven't thrown before, and some boxes of mosquito repellant patches with only a few pieces left that I just put inside all together in one box, we were trying out different brands that's why we had more than one box open.

Then, I did the same to our first aid kit. After throwing away expired items, yellowing and dirty looking adhesive bandages, and empty ointment tubes, I'm now left with only a few items. Because I didn't really pay much attention to this, I wasn't sure what's in there that when we need something I'd assume that we don't have it so we would just buy a new one, that's why we have more than one of the same things in there. Anyway, I have checked a list of what should be in an ideal first aid kit and I still have to get a few things but before that I need to make something nice where I can store everything.

I was checking out the shoe boxes I have but none of them is the size I needed. I just used illustration board since it's sturdy enough for this project. I cut pieces of boards with the measurements that will make up the size I want for the box and the lid. I used white glue to attach the pieces together.

I have these 1 inch by 1 inch pieces of scrapbook paper that I collected from my previous projects. Everytime I have small pieces of paper that I cut in excess of what I needed for a project, instead of throwing them away, I cut them into these little squares. I knew that I'll be able to use them somehow and now's a great time. With the ever reliable mod podge, I decoupaged the box with the little pieces of paper in various prints.

I just used colored paper on the inside of the box. I also cut two crosses, one for the lid and one for the front of the box, from a pink sheet of colored paper since I don't have a red one, I just used red watercolor to paint over them. Then I did a quick finish, applying a moderate coat of mod podge on the surface.

Up close, the glossy finish is noticeable and so are the brush stroke lines, haha. I always forget to buy a sponge brush for this. Sponge brush would give a smoother mod podge finish. I'll make sure to get one the next time I go to a mall or a craft store.

I love how it turned out. It's just a simple box with my personal touch which is what I love about making a DIY project. Now, the only thing to do is to update it, have it fully stocked with the necessary items, and keep it tidy.

Is your first aid kit updated? There are helpful sites you can find online which list the basic items needed to be present in a first aid kit. Checking them out and seeing that there are still a lot of things I don't have in my kit made me realize that I'm not a girl scout. "Always be prepared" is the girl scout motto, right? Now I killed the joke, whatever, haha.

  5. This post just reminded me that I also have to clean out our first aid kit. The one I usually bring during our travels is well-maintained. However, the bigger one we leave at home is not. Thanks for the reminder! :)

    1. Thank you. As long as you know what you have and they're updated, that's great. My real issue was actually having some things that already needed to be disposed of, haha.
